Darden’s Delights is more than just a pie company; it’s a testament to the power of purpose-driven business, rooted in the belief that everyone deserves a place at the table. Based in Atlanta, Darden’s Delights was founded on the premise of enhancing opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities, creating a space where community, delicious food, and meaningful work intersect.
The story began with the Darden family, who set out to blend their love for baking with a heartfelt mission to make a difference. Inspired by their daughter who was born with a developmental disability, the Dardens envisioned a future where individuals like her could find fulfilling roles, contribute to society, and be celebrated for their unique abilities. This dream blossomed into Darden’s Delights, a company that not only produces exceptional Southern pies but also prioritizes empowerment and inclusivity.
Each pie crafted by Darden’s Delights, from traditional favorites like pecan and sweet potato to seasonal specialties, embodies the company’s dedication to quality and care. More than that, the pies represent the values of belonging and opportunity—ingredients that are essential to the company’s identity. By hiring and training individuals with developmental disabilities, Darden’s Delights provides meaningful employment, promotes skill-building, and nurtures a sense of pride and achievement.
PIE IT FORWARD
The company’s mission extends beyond their own kitchen, influencing the community by demonstrating the importance of inclusion and the power of shared experiences. This month’s partnership with local food pantry, Solidarity Sandy Springs, is yet another testament to that mission. Jennifer Barnes, founder of Solidarity and long-time Sandy Springs resident, first discovered Darden’s Delights in 2018 when her real estate team was looking to provide their clients with the gift of a holiday pie. It was love at first bite.
“Oh, honey!” she exclaimed when speaking on her first encounter with Darden’s, “It was like a dream come true! A local company that shares our team’s mission of opening doors to people’s future? They were perfect – the pies and the people!”
A few years and a pandemic later, Jennifer found herself in search of creative ways to engage her community in the pantry’s mission of “neighbors helping neighbors”. Darden’s was a natural fit. Together, they have created the Pie it Forward campaign, where a slice of the fundraiser’s pie sales will go directly toward helping families facing food insecurity in Sandy Springs.
Darden’s Delights serves as a reminder that the best meals are those where everyone has a seat and feels valued. With each homemade pie, they offer so much more than the “smack yo mama it’s so good” flavor they are known for; their commitment to community and meaningful inclusion sets the table for a brighter future for us all.
